Every person has eccentricities. However, most try to hide them so that only those closest to him or her might be aware of them. However, it is different with bosses. For some reason, the higher up a boss is in the hierarchy, the more encouraged she or he is to flaunt bizarre behavior or statements especially in front of employees. The witnessing subordinates then in an after-shock state for days and months after the incident. Once partially recovered, they are yet again faced with another baffling statement or act from the crazy boss.
In crazy bosses, Bing makes the point that many bosses cross the line of being eccentric to becoming completely crazy. To make his point, Bing tells stories about real bosses from his life as well as from the experiences of others, going from one extreme boss’s behavior to the other. One has to admit that many of the stories are entertaining and some are so shocking but Bing with his unique style always adds to it a nice slice of humor.
While the idea is very original and creative, however the book itself was a bit of a disappointment compared to the other books by Stanley Bing. While I loved his two books “What Would Machiavelli Do?” and “Sun Tzu Was a Sissy,” I found “Crazy Bosses” to be rather mundane. I think he wasted a good chance to turn a great idea into a wonderful and entertaining book.
I would recommend this book to someone who had a hard time with bosses and wants a book that helps her vent her anger or feel better about her workplace misery by exploring miseries of subordinates who had to deal with bosses worse than hers. However, if you have never read the satirical works of Bing before, this is not the book I would recommend to start with. One of the other two books I mentioned above will give you more laughter and fun for your money and time.
